Instagram profile optimization:
9 fixes that turn views into followers

Your Reels bring people in. Your profile decides whether they stay. Here is what to fix, in order.

Why your profile matters more than your best Reel

A Reel can reach lakhs of people who have never heard of you. Some of them tap through to your profile, and that is where the real decision happens. In a few seconds they scan your name, bio, highlights and grid and decide whether to follow, message you or leave.

That is why an account can get 1,00,000+ views on a Reel and only a handful of new followers. The content did its job. The profile did not. Instagram profile optimization fixes that leak.

Score your profile before you read on

Our free 3-Second Profile Test asks nine one-tap questions and shows your profile being scored part by part, with your top three fixes. It takes about a minute.

The 9-point Instagram profile optimization checklist

These are in the order a visitor sees them, top to bottom.

1. A profile photo that works at thumbnail size

Your photo appears tiny in comments, search and DMs. Use a close-up face for a personal brand, or just your logo mark on a plain background for a business. Full logos with small text turn into a blur. Keep the same photo across platforms so people recognise you.

2. A searchable name field

The name field is separate from your @username, and Instagram uses it in search. Most brands waste it on the brand name alone. Use the format Brand | What you do + city:

  • Before: Glow Studio
  • After: Glow Studio | Bridal Makeup Mumbai

Now you can appear when someone searches "bridal makeup Mumbai", not only when they already know your name.

3. A first bio line that says who you help and how

Your bio has 150 characters. The first line does most of the work. Write it as I/we help [who] get [result], not a slogan.

  • Before: Passionate about creativity ✨ Dream big
  • After: Helping cafes in Pune fill tables on weekdays

If a stranger cannot see themselves in that line, they will not keep reading.

4. One line of proof

Proof turns "maybe" into "follow". Add one concrete thing: a number of clients, a recognisable client name, "Featured in", years in business or a result. "120+ D2C brands served" does more than three adjectives.

5. One clear call to action

End the bio with a single next step, pointed at with ↓. "Book a free call", "DM PRICE for rates" or "Shop the Diwali edit". Four different asks usually get none.

6. A link that matches that action

Instagram allows up to five links, but more choices usually mean fewer clicks. If your bio says "book a call", the link should open the booking page directly. If you must use a link page, put your main action first and keep it short.

7. Highlights that answer buyer questions

Highlights are the most underused sales tool on Instagram. Visitors tap them to check whether you are legit and affordable. Replace "Goa 2024" and "Random" with:

  • Results or Work: before-and-afters, campaigns, outcomes
  • Reviews: screenshots of real customer messages and Google reviews
  • Prices or Packages: even a starting price filters serious buyers
  • How it works: your process in four or five stories
  • FAQ: delivery, timelines, locations

Use simple, matching highlight covers so the row looks intentional.

8. Three pinned posts: intro, proof, offer

You can pin up to three posts, and new visitors see them first. Use them deliberately:

  • Intro: a Reel that explains who you are and who you serve
  • Proof: a client result, testimonial or case study
  • Offer: what you sell and how to get it

Review your pins every month. An old viral post is not always your best introduction.

9. A grid that looks like one brand

Visitors judge the last nine posts as a whole. Pick two or three brand colours and one consistent style for Reel covers, and rotate a few clear content themes. A consistent grid signals that you are active and serious, even before anyone opens a post.

Settings people forget

  • Professional account: switch to a business or creator account to get Insights, contact buttons and a category label.
  • Category label: choose the category that matches what people search for, not a vague one.
  • Contact buttons: add email, phone or WhatsApp so a ready buyer can reach you in one tap.
  • Username: keep it short, easy to spell and the same as your other platforms where possible.

Common mistakes we see on Indian brand profiles

  • A bio made only of emojis and taglines, with no mention of the product or service.
  • The name field repeating the username instead of adding a search keyword.
  • A link page with ten buttons and the most important one at the bottom.
  • Highlights full of old festival posts instead of reviews and prices.
  • Pinned posts that are years old or off-topic.

How to tell if it is working

Open Instagram Insights and compare profile visits with new follows and link taps for the same period. Note the numbers before you make changes, then check again two to four weeks later. If visits stay the same but follows and taps go up, your profile is converting better. If a Reel sends a spike of visits with almost no follows, come back to this checklist.

Frequently asked questions

What is Instagram profile optimization?

It means setting up every part of your profile, from the name field and bio to highlights and pinned posts, so a new visitor understands who you are and what to do next within a few seconds. A well-optimised profile turns more profile visits into follows, DMs and enquiries.

Is the Instagram name field searchable?

Yes. The name field, which is different from your @username, is used in Instagram search. Adding what you do and your city, such as "Riya | Bridal Makeup Mumbai", helps people find you when they search for that service.

How many links can I add to my Instagram bio?

Instagram lets you add up to five links. Having the option does not mean you should use it: one clear link that matches your bio's call to action usually gets more clicks than a list of choices.

How do I know if my profile is converting?

In Instagram Insights, compare profile visits with new follows and link taps over the same period. If a Reel sends many visits but very few follows, the profile is the bottleneck, not the content.

Can Digital Berries optimise my Instagram profile?

Yes. Take our free 3-Second Profile Test for an instant score, or book a call and we will review your actual profile and send back exactly what to change.
